Wire Cutters

wire cuttersDescription / Function

Wire cutters are like pliers, they have sharp edges that cut through electrical wire. The long handles generate mechanical advantage making it easier to cut through wire. They are a hand held tool that can easily be transported. Rubberised handles make the wire cutters easier to grip.

Safe Use

Because the sharp section of the wire cutters is relatively small, they are quite a safe tool to use. Caution should always be used when cutting wires to make sure that a live current is not present.

Wire cutters can easily be transported in a tool belt, which is very useful when working at height. When not in use they should be stored in a tool box or lock box.

There are a range of wire cutters available and the more expensive ones are generally better at cutting through thicker wires. Specialist cutters that generate more power can be used when cutting 4.5mm wires used for cookers. Wires can also be cut with a small hacksaw but this will take longer and not provide a good cut. With some practice wire cutters can also be used to strip wire making them a versatile tool with more than one use.
